PLAY IDEA OF THE DAY

Fly a Kite

SUITABLE FOR AGES 8+

If the wind is blowing why not take advantage and go fly a kite! If you are feeling really brave you could even make one as well! To make a kite you will need two sticks (one larger than the other). Tape these together to form a cross with the shorter one a third of the way along the longer one and at right angles. Now you will need to make a hole in each of the four ends of the sticks. Once done attach string to the frame by threading it through the four stick ends (taut but not so it bends the sticks) leave a loop at the top and the bottom by tying a knot as you go past these points. This will make the diamond shape that you will end up with for your kite. Next take your paper or material that you are going to use for the sail of kite. If you use plain paper you can get the kids to personalise their kite. Lay the paper down with the kite frame on top and draw around it. Cut out the sail leaving a little extra space so you can fold over the edges. Once cut out fold the edges over your frame and staple or glue the paper to the frame. Finally add your string. You will need two lengths of string one needs to be tied to the top loop of the kite and then at the level of the cross in the frame tie a new loop finally thread the string to the bottom loop and tie it to the bottom loop leaving a length over for a tail. You can add ribbons spaced down the tail for drag as this will make it pretty - and stabilise it! Finally tie a long piece of string to the middle loop and make it as long as you want to get into the air. The end knot tied to the kite should be wound around a piece of card. Now you can decorate the kite and get flying!
